In the quest to maintain focus amidst distractions, individuals often face both external and internal challenges. Jennifer Moore, Rio Salado Faculty Chair for Psychology, provides insights into effective strategies to enhance concentration.
"All of the following suggestions have been proven to be helpful... The key is to find out which ones work best for YOU," Moore advises. She emphasizes the importance of self-awareness in determining what techniques are most effective.
Physical activity is recommended as a method to regain focus. Engaging in light exercise such as stretching or taking a walk can help alleviate stress and promote relaxation by releasing neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.
Moore also highlights the significance of staying hydrated and nourished. Hunger and dehydration can impede concentration, so having healthy snacks and water readily available is crucial. She cautions against consuming sugary snacks that may lead to energy crashes.
Multitasking is discouraged in favor of concentrating on one task at a time. Eliminating distractions, such as muting phones or completing chores beforehand, can aid in maintaining focus.
Short study sessions are more beneficial than prolonged periods of concentration. Moore suggests using techniques like Pomodoro, which involves 25-minute focused sessions followed by short breaks, allowing the mind to recharge.
Timing plays a critical role in cognitive performance. Identifying peak periods of mental alertness can optimize study sessions during times when energy levels are high.
Taking short naps is another strategy endorsed by Moore. Brief rest periods can enhance cognitive functions such as memory and language skills.
Finally, Moore encourages experimentation with different methods: "Try these out! Which ones worked for you? Do some work better for you at different times of the day? Take note of those techniques that had a positive impact on your ability to focus and use those strategies to refocus when you lose track!"
