Artists in the Phoenix area are exploring a unique printmaking technique in an exhibition titled "The Art of Letting Go" at the Gallery at Chandler Center for the Arts. Curated by Edgar “8ahau” Fernandez, the exhibition features monosilk prints created by 12 artists, including Fernandez himself. This method involves drawing onto a screen and creating a single print by pulling a squeegee across it.
Participants ranged from novice to expert printmakers, each bringing their own style to the open studio sessions. The directive was simple: use specific pencils and crayons to draw on the screen, resulting in unique single-edition prints. Fernandez commented on his experience as co-curator: “This process has been a fun learning experience for me...reminding me of my printmaking classes at ASU working together as a community.”
Jillian Nakornthap, Vision Gallery Curator, shared insights into how this exhibition came about: “The initial idea for this exhibition was conceived during a studio visit with Edgar a few years ago...we discussed possibly having a show that would highlight this type of printmaking.”
"The Art of Letting Go" will be displayed until January 10, 2025. The gallery is located at 250 N. Arizona Ave., with free admission during its operating hours.
A reception will take place from 6-8 p.m. on January 10, 2025. While attendance is free, reservations via Eventbrite are encouraged.
