The Chandler Museum in Chandler, Arizona, is set to present "¡MONSTRAS!: Female Legends of Latin America", an exhibition that challenges traditional narratives by focusing on female monsters. Opening on April 26 and accessible until August 31, the event seeks to redefine perceptions through a feminist lens.
The term "MONSTRAS" emphasizes the dual standards imposed on women who defy societal expectations. It is based on a podcast created by Dr. Orquidea Morales and Brenda Salguero, which delves into the dark, ominous legends they first encountered in their youth. Originating from Central and South America and the Caribbean, the exhibition also uncovers similarities with monster tales from around the globe, highlighting themes shaped by colonialism, the slave trade, and the fusion of indigenous cultures with Catholicism.
The display features original works commissioned for this exhibition by artists Rayos Magos, Anna Lisa Escobedo, and Beatriz Vasquez. "¡MONSTRAS!: Female Legends of Latin America" reveals that monster stories across cultures reinforce the importance of adhering to societal norms.
The exhibition will be hosted at the Chandler Museum, located at 300 S. Chandler Village Drive. Admission is free, with opening hours from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The museum remains closed on Mondays.
