The cities of Tempe and Chandler are taking steps to address mental health by involving local barbers and stylists as advocates in their communities. This initiative is part of a national effort aimed at reducing the stigma surrounding mental health.
Barbers and stylists, who often serve as confidants to their clients, are being encouraged through the Beyond the Shop initiative to expand their roles. By becoming trained mental health advocates, they can connect clients with essential resources that promote well-being.
A free training session is scheduled for Monday, February 3, at the Tempe EnVision Center. Interested participants are urged to register in advance due to limited space.
Beyond the Shop seeks to promote mental health advocacy within marginalized and underrepresented communities. In collaboration with Downtown Tempe Authority, Tempe and Chandler aim to improve access to mental health resources through this program.
“Through the friendly influence of barbers and stylists, we are helping to transform the narrative around mental health and foster a healthier, more resilient future for our residents. We’re thrilled to bring this proactive approach to Tempe and Chandler,” said Tempe Vice Mayor Doreen Garlid.
Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke added, “Barbers and stylists are pillars of our community, offering a space where people feel comfortable and connected. Through this initiative, we’re empowering these trusted professionals to become advocates for mental health and wellness. This collaborative effort with our neighboring city of Tempe reinforces our city’s commitment to fostering a supportive and compassionate environment for all residents.”
Additional opportunities for local barbers and stylists include participating in Downtown Tempe Authority’s Barber Battle Series or attending an Industry and Community Mixer on Sunday, February 2.
