Councilmember Jane Poston has been appointed to the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Transportation Policy Committee, representing Chandler. The committee is responsible for regional transportation planning and policy, as well as overseeing projects funded by a half-cent county sales tax dedicated to transportation.
In November, voters in Maricopa County approved Proposition 479, extending the county sales tax for transportation until 2045. This funding is projected to provide over $800 million for improvements to regional freeways, transit services, and arterial streets in Chandler.
"This appointment allows me to further represent the interests of Chandler as we implement regionally funded transportation projects," stated Councilmember Poston. "I am committed to ensuring our community’s prosperity and well-being through these regional investments and long-range planning."
Chandler has utilized federal funds and regional grants to improve its transportation network. The policy committee plays a crucial role in allocating funding for such enhancements. An example is the Frye Road Protected Bike Lane project, with approximately 95 percent of its cost covered by federal funds awarded through MAG's process.
The committee includes members from cities, towns, Native nations in Maricopa County, the Arizona State Transportation Board, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, and stakeholders from the business community and transportation industry.
