The Chandler City Council has approved two key agreements to advance the Frye Road Protected Bike Lane project. A Professional Services Agreement was awarded to Consultant Engineering, Inc. for construction management services, and a Construction Agreement was signed with Granite Construction Company for the project's execution.

The initiative will use federal grant funding to enhance streetscape features and improve existing bicycle lanes on Frye Road. These lanes connect neighborhoods, schools, downtown Chandler, and the Paseo Trail System.

Residents expressed a need for safer and more connected bike facilities during outreach for the Transportation Master Plan in 2019. This project is the first effort from that plan to address these concerns.

Mayor Kevin Hartke stated, “This is an exciting project — a first of its kind in Chandler. It will create a more comfortable biking environment for an array of users without removing any vehicular lanes. People of all abilities, and especially those who are newer cyclists, can now bike more confidently, and will be better able to connect to the amenities in Downtown Chander, schools, the Paseo Trail and beyond.”

The project covers Frye Road from San Marcos Park (Fairview Street) to the Paseo Trail over approximately 2.5 miles. It aims to connect downtown Chandler with five Chandler Unified School District schools by introducing horizontal separation and vertical elements between bike lanes and vehicular traffic.

Enhancements such as new monument signs, art installations, and landscaping will improve the corridor's appearance. The city also plans to repave roads and replace old streetlights using grant funds.

Construction is slated to begin in early March.
