Chandler City Council has established a 21-member Resident Advisory Committee to assist in updating the city's General Plan, a process mandated by state law every decade. This plan will influence Chandler's land use and development strategies for the next ten years. With Chandler being 94 percent developed and only 832 acres of vacant land remaining, most of which is designated for non-residential purposes, the update will focus on redevelopment, infill, and mixed-use projects.
The General Plan update will also include insights from an ongoing Comprehensive Housing Plan that assesses current housing availability, affordability, and future requirements. Since 2016, Chandler has seen the construction of over 12,048 single-family and multi-family homes.
A critical aspect of this long-term planning involves aligning planned land use with water allocations to ensure sustainable water resources for the city.
In a joint work session with the Planning and Zoning Commission, the City Council reviewed progress on the Downtown Region Area Plan. Expected to be completed this summer, this plan aims to guide future development in downtown Chandler and its vicinity. It seeks to promote adaptive reuse and revitalization while maintaining Chandler's historic character. The plan suggests policies for mixed-use developments at existing industrial sites east of Downtown Chandler to enhance residential and commercial opportunities.
