Mesa is offering a new opportunity for young residents to engage in climate action initiatives. The city, with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, will distribute an additional $85,000 to individuals aged 15 to 24 for projects aimed at addressing Mesa's climate objectives. This initiative allows youth to develop and manage practical solutions for environmental challenges.
"The best part of this project is that our next generation leads it," stated Mayor Mark Freeman. "It's important for all of us to take care of our natural resources, which is key to everything we do in Mesa. We're grateful for the support from Bloomberg Philanthropies and excited to work with the next generation of leaders to build a more sustainable future."
Young residents or students in Mesa can apply for grants up to $5,000. These funds are intended for projects targeting goals such as heat mitigation, water stewardship, clean air enhancement, and increasing the city's tree canopy. Applications submitted by March 28 will receive priority review, with a final deadline set for May 23.
In 2024, Bloomberg Philanthropies provided Mesa with $50,000 in microgrants supporting youth-led climate projects like tree planting and public education campaigns. Details about the program and application process can be found on the City of Mesa website.
Local governments have increasingly contributed to climate mitigation over the past decade. Mesa is among those cities actively implementing a Climate Action Plan focused on preserving its environment and natural resources.
