Today, the House of Representatives passed the Midnight Rules Relief Act, also known as H.R. 77. The bill, sponsored by Congressman Andy Biggs from Arizona, was approved with a narrow vote of 212-208. Following the passage, Congressman Biggs released a statement highlighting the significance of this legislative move.
Biggs emphasized that the act would facilitate congressional oversight over new federal rules implemented by unelected officials during the closing period of President Biden's administration. "Today’s passage of Midnight Rules Relief Act will make it easier for Congress to check the unelected bureaucrats who feverishly wrote new federal rules before the end of the Biden Administration," he stated.
He noted that in 2024 alone, more than 1,400 new regulations were introduced under Biden's administration, costing approximately $1.34 trillion. According to Biggs, many of these regulations do not align with what he perceives as the mandate given by American voters in November.
"The Midnight Rules Relief Act will allow Congress and President Trump’s Administration to follow through on our promises to rein in the out-of-control bureaucracy and return power to the American people and those they elect," Biggs continued.
The congressman called upon the Senate to expedite consideration of this legislation so that it can be enacted into law by President Trump. He expressed his commitment to collaborating with colleagues across both legislative and executive branches to dismantle what he described as an extensive administrative state established under Joe Biden's leadership.
