Top spellers from the southeast valley participated in the Maricopa County Region 1 Spelling Bee on February 15. Isabelle Garcia, an eighth-grade student at Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School, emerged as the champion. This victory qualifies her for the Arizona State Bee for a second consecutive year. Previously, Garcia advanced to the national competition in Washington, D.C.
Garcia successfully spelled words such as diaspora, arbutus, and koto during six competitive rounds. In the championship round, she correctly spelled "patella."
A total of 25 participants from various educational institutions, including Kyrene School District, Mesa Public Schools, Tempe Elementary School District, and private and charter schools, competed after winning their respective qualifying bees.
Garcia will join 27 other top spellers at the Arizona State Spelling Bee on March 15 at Madison Center for the Arts. The top two finishers there will advance to the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. The Kyrene community extends its congratulations to all participants and wishes Garcia success.
