Mesa Public Schools recently recognized Summit Academy as the Spotlight School during a board meeting on March 25. Principal Michael Deignan highlighted three individuals from the academy for their outstanding contributions.

Sequoia Foust, a student at Summit Academy, was praised for her musical talents and academic achievements. Since fifth grade, Sequoia has been the 1st Chair Percussionist in the Junior High Honor Band. She also participated in the state's High School Solo and Ensemble Festival, where she received a Superior Rating for her marimba solo. Outside of music, Sequoia excels academically and is active in cross-country running and Jiu-Jitsu. Reflecting on her experiences, Sequoia stated, “Whether it’s a math problem in class or a drum groove in Jazz Band, it is always rewarding to find success after failure."

Heather Oakley was recognized in the Classified Staff Spotlight. Joining Summit Academy shortly before COVID-19 disruptions began, Heather played a key role by supervising online learning centers during hybrid learning periods. She has since worked closely with primary-grade students to support literacy development and now manages responsibilities in the elementary lunchroom and playground.

Cody Allen was acknowledged in the Certified Staff Spotlight category for his 13 years of teaching experience across K–8 levels. Cody's work focuses on inclusive co-teaching environments at junior high levels and serving as special education department chair for both elementary and junior high campuses over the past four years. He often steps into administrative roles when needed.

Principal Deignan expressed gratitude towards these honorees for their dedication and positive impact within Summit Academy.
