Arizona State University (ASU) has launched an initiative to support high school students in the Los Angeles area affected by recent wildfires. ASU President Michael Crow extended an invitation to local education leaders to share resources with students whose educational paths may have been disrupted by the fires. Families can access information about guaranteed admission pathways at asu.edu/SupportLA, including assistance with application deadlines and educational costs.

ASU offers degree programs both in-person and online, providing flexibility for students in Los Angeles and Arizona. This initiative follows previous efforts by ASU to assist communities impacted by natural disasters, such as hurricanes and the 2023 Maui wildfire.

"ASU has been inspired by the LA-area families who are doing all they can to recover and move forward," said President Michael Crow. "It’s part of our university charter to help the communities we serve, and this is one small way that we can assist Angelenos. Everyone deserves access to high-quality education no matter their circumstances."

For students like Maria Knierim from Palisades Charter High School, whose home was destroyed by the wildfires, ASU's program provides reassurance during uncertain times. Her father, Sean Knierim, expressed relief knowing there is a supportive pathway available for his daughter.

"The number of kids that this is going to make a difference for is amazing," he said. "Just to know they have that pathway and support and they’re going to be OK."

In addition to college-related resources, families will find information on ASU Prep Digital, Axio, Universal Learner Courses, and more through ASU's digital learning library.

Local education leaders have voiced their support for ASU's efforts:

Alberto M. Carvalho of Los Angeles Unified School District stated: "The devastating impact of the wildfires has shaken so many families, and this incredible ASU initiative provides critical relief."

Debra Duardo from Los Angeles County Office of Education added: "This dedication to supporting college-bound students with streamlined admission pathways offers a beacon of hope during a very difficult time."

Elizabeth Blanco from Pasadena Unified School District emphasized: "We are incredibly grateful for this partnership which provides hope and a pathway to a brighter future."

Sarah Shulkind of California Association of Independent Schools remarked: "ASU’s dedication...offers hope and stability during this time of uncertainty."

Paul Escala from Archdiocese of Los Angeles noted: "ASU’s proactive approach...provides much-needed relief for our students."

Pamela Magee from Palisades Charter High School highlighted: "This support is crucial for our students as they navigate their next steps."

Eric Barba from Pasadena High School commented: "ASU’s initiative...gives our students hope and a clear pathway to continue their education without added stress."
