The February 2025 Business Roundtable focused on the technical and trade industry, offering insights into current disruptors and emerging trends. A significant topic of discussion was the impact of electric vehicles (EVs) on these industries. Attendees noted that modern vehicles, which feature over 115 onboard computers, have increased the demand for advanced calibration equipment and skilled technicians proficient in computer-based diagnostics.
Artificial intelligence (AI) also emerged as a major subject. Businesses are exploring how to integrate AI effectively into their operations—not as a replacement for employees but as a tool to enhance efficiency. Although AI is reshaping hiring needs, trades like construction remain less affected due to the necessity of physical labor.
As Gilbert continues its growth trajectory, businesses face expansion challenges. One identified gap is the absence of a convention center needed to support the region's growing business and community events. Attendees emphasized adapting services to meet the evolving demands of an expanding community.
Infrastructure improvements were also discussed, with walkability and public transportation being key points. As Gilbert grows, there is an increasing need for better transit options to aid workforce mobility, particularly for those without personal transportation. While highway access via Loop 202 and US 60 is efficient, additional transit solutions could alleviate congestion further.
The roundtable underscored technology's critical role in shaping Gilbert’s business landscape alongside workforce evolution and infrastructure development. Moving forward, collaboration between industry leaders and policymakers will be essential to address workforce needs, promote business-friendly policies, and ensure sustainable growth.
"Attendees highlighted the impact of electric vehicles (EVs) on their industries," said one participant at the event. "Businesses are navigating how to incorporate AI effectively—not as a replacement for staff," another attendee remarked during discussions about artificial intelligence.
