CHANDLER, Ariz. – The City of Chandler is hosting an event to recognize Vietnam veterans and celebrate Vietnamese culture, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The event, titled "Freedom, Hope, Future," highlights the contributions and sacrifices of veterans and the success of Vietnamese refugees in the U.S.
"This event is dedicated to our Vietnam veterans, recognizing their sacrifice and valor," stated Councilmember Matt Orlando. He emphasized the importance of honoring the veterans and acknowledging the thriving Vietnamese community in Chandler. "Their service paved the way for a thriving Vietnamese community in the United States, and we are honored to have so many Vietnamese refugees call Chandler home. This event celebrates their storied history and profound future. Also, it recognizes that America served as a land of opportunity and a new life for the tens of thousands of Vietnamese who escaped communism.”
The idea for "Freedom, Hope, Future" emerged from Vietnamese refugees in Chandler. Efforts by Councilmember Orlando, city departments, and community members made the commemoration possible.
“We are deeply grateful to the City of Chandler and Councilmember Orlando for recognizing the significance of this event,” expressed Chantal Hong Nguyen VanKlompenberg, a founding community member. "My family has lived in Chandler for decades, and we are excited to showcase the vibrant Vietnamese community that has flourished here since the Vietnam War. This is our opportunity to thank veterans for the lasting impact they’ve had on generations of Vietnamese refugees.”
Scheduled for Saturday, April 26, the event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Chandler City Hall courtyard. It will feature an array of programs allowing attendees to engage with Vietnamese culture while honoring veterans.
“Attendees will become part of this important story,” VanKlompenberg added, highlighting the event's experiential and immersive nature. “They will be immersed in Vietnamese culture while paying tribute to the veterans who helped make our success possible.”
Chandler City Hall is situated at 175 S. Arizona Ave. To accommodate the event, East Chicago Street will be closed between Arizona Avenue and Washington Street. Free parking is available at 240 S. Washington St.
