City of Tempe hiring Class A CDL drivers/operators for solid waste services including garbage and recycling collection

Garbage

City of Tempe issued the following announcement on Jan. 20.

Serving your community.  Helping the environment by providing essential sanitation services.  Being a hero to kids across Tempe.  These are just a few examples of how becoming a City of Tempe Solid Waste Equipment Operator is one of the most rewarding jobs out there.  And now is the best time to join the team with a new, innovative approach to attract qualified drivers.

The city has several positions open for operators, with a higher starting pay that ranges from $22.61 to $26.22, depending on experience.  The city has also implemented a hiring incentive – all new operators will receive a total of $2,500 - $1,000 after completion of a probationary period and $1,500 after one year of service.

City of Tempe solid waste equipment operators receive much more than just great pay. Other benefits include:

  • Medical, dental, vision insurance
  • Four-day work weeks
  • Generous vacation and sick time accruals
  • 11 paid holidays, personal day, eight hours of holiday leave
  • Participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (state pension)
  • Guaranteed salary increase of 3.5% in July 2022
  • Overtime opportunities

Interested applicants can visit tempe.gov/MunicipalUtilities to see the full job description and to apply.

The City of Tempe remains committed to maintaining exceptional solid waste, recycling and green organics collection during a very challenging time.  Labor markets are very competitive, with most public and private sector companies struggling to find and retain employees. Compounding the issue are escalating numbers of COVID-19 cases, which result in more staffing shortages due to sick time.  Though no one knows how long this will last, the city will continue to do everything it can to attract and retain the most qualified team members in the Valley.  Many Tempe residents have offered words of encouragement, appreciation and support to the operators – just one of the many reasons why Tempe is a great place to work.
