Gilbert, Ariz. – Gilbert has entered into a partnership with HD SOUTH, Home of the Gilbert Historical Museum, to expand the museum’s recreational programming and services.
At its June 20th meeting, the Gilbert Town Council approved an agreement with the local nonprofit to provide funding for their building and program expansion.
The project will include renovations to the existing Gilbert Historical Museum and a new 6,500 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in the existing courtyard.
Gilbert’s current recreation programs operate at nearly full capacity and the partnership will provide a wider variety of classes for residents to participate in. Other benefits to the community include new public art exhibitions, plays and productions, resident discounts and more.
The Town Council also approved the acquisition of the right-of-way and required easements of the parcel at the southwest corner of Gilbert and Elliot Roads – where HD SOUTH is located. Purchasing the land from the Gilbert Historical Society will allow the town to widen the intersection to ease traffic congestion as outlined in Gilbert’s 2023-2032 Capital Improvement Plan.
The total cost to purchase the parcel and support HD SOUTH’s renovations and expansions is estimated at $1,000,000.
The town will provide funds in exchange for an increase in arts and culture programming for Gilbert’s community, especially seniors.
HD SOUTH provides a wide variety of programs including history preservation, art workshops, health and wellness, literature, and music. In addition, the facility is available to rent for events. Gilbert Partners with HD SOUTH to Increase Arts and Cultural Programming
