Chandler, Ariz. – The Chandler City Council has awarded two agreements for the rehabilitation of the 66-inch sewer interceptor along Price Road, south of the Loop 202 Santan Freeway. This pipe is the largest in the city and handles approximately half of Chandler's daily wastewater treatment.
Construction services will be provided by B&F Contracting, Inc., with a contract not exceeding $43,696,207.25. Dibble & Associates Consulting Engineers, Inc. will manage construction with a contract not exceeding $1,526,019.50.
The Public Works and Utilities Department oversees a Wastewater Sewer Assessment Program to evaluate and repair deteriorated sewer pipes and manholes within the city's collection system. This program identified the need to rehabilitate around 13,000 linear feet of 66-inch diameter sanitary sewer pipe and 22 manholes along Price Road from the Loop 202 Santan Freeway to the Ocotillo Water Reclamation Facility.
The project is scheduled to begin in June 2024 and conclude in January 2026. Initial construction will involve installing temporary sewer bypass pipes in southbound Price Road to divert up to 15 million gallons of wastewater daily around the work site.
Minimal traffic impacts are expected during the first two months of construction. However, starting in August 2024, significant traffic disruptions are anticipated as two southbound lanes will close due to bypass piping installation. Northbound lanes will remain open initially but will also face closures later.
Once bypass piping is installed, relining work on the sewer pipe will commence along Price Road, affecting traffic in both directions from fall 2024 until summer 2025 when one southbound lane and two northbound lanes will be closed.
The final phase involves removing bypass pipes starting in summer 2025 followed by roadway paving work in fall 2025.
The project schedule has been coordinated with other ongoing projects impacting traffic further north along Price Corridor and upcoming improvements by the Arizona Department of Transportation on Loop 202 Santan Freeway.
