Sue Hart-Wadley and Searle Wadley have donated $10 million to Arizona PBS, marking the largest gift in the station's history. The donation will assist the Arizona State University-affiliated station in purchasing and constructing a new broadcast tower, funding a national science-focused series, and expanding educational outreach efforts throughout the state.

“We wanted to offer this gift when we could see the results of our giving and establish a legacy now rather than waiting for our demise,” said Searle Wadley. He emphasized their long-standing appreciation for Arizona PBS, calling it “a statewide treasure that we value, and it’s a resource that should not be lost.”

Sue Hart-Wadley expressed hope that their contribution would inspire others to support community initiatives. “Arizona PBS is a gem in the desert, and we hope to be an example to others,” she said. “We are excited to watch our gift in action in this community we love.”

The couple has been dedicated supporters of PBS for decades, even before moving to Arizona nearly 20 years ago. They were motivated to increase their philanthropy upon discovering that Arizona PBS’ broadcast tower required replacement after many years of service.

“They (Arizona PBS) recognized that this was something that was urgently needed and convinced us of that, too,” Searle said. The new tower will feature a 30-foot triangular base and stand 297 feet high with a 50-foot antenna on top. It is expected to be operational by 2026.

Lucile Oglesby, interim director of development for Arizona PBS at the ASU Foundation for a New American University, praised the Wadleys’ generosity: “This donation certainly sets an example for others to offer financial support to worthy causes.”

Scott Woelfel, general manager of Arizona PBS, called the gift "transformational" and highlighted its impact on continuing the station’s mission. “Our robust, growing community of members continues to demonstrate extraordinary commitment,” he said.

In addition to supporting infrastructure improvements, part of the donation will fund a planned science-based series hosted by Miles O’Brien focusing on innovators addressing society’s most challenging problems. Searle Wadley noted his enthusiasm for science education: “PBS has been really helpful in my understanding of science and how important it is to society as a whole.”

The funds will also enhance Arizona PBS’ educational outreach efforts. Last year alone, the station served over 1.6 million children and 92,000 educators across Arizona.

“I’ve been very impressed with all my interactions with Arizona PBS employees and their expertise,” Sue Hart-Wadley added. “They’re very enthusiastic in what they do … and that’s contagious.”
