Optical technologies play a crucial role in various sectors, including medical systems, cameras, virtual reality headsets, and biometric tools. The demand for professionals skilled in these technologies is on the rise. In response to this need, Rio Salado College is introducing a new Precision Optics Level 1 microcredential pathway starting January 2025.

A microcredential is defined as a short-term educational program that equips students with specific skills and knowledge in a particular field or industry. These programs are designed to be flexible, affordable, and accessible, making them suitable for individuals looking to upskill or reskill.

The Precision Optics Microcredential at Rio Salado consists of two courses that can be completed within one semester. "Because the program only consists of two courses, students can finish the microcredential in one semester," stated a representative from Rio Salado College. The college offers convenient Monday start dates for students who prefer not to wait for traditional semester schedules.

The pathway includes two courses: "Precision Optics and Mathematical Concepts" (3 credits), which covers foundational skills needed for careers in optical technology; and "Critical Thinking Durable Skills" (non-credit, free), which focuses on developing essential problem-solving and analytical skills.

Upon completing the program, students will earn two open digital badges to demonstrate their expertise. Open badges are awarded to individuals who have learned or demonstrated specific skills or knowledge.

Graduates of the microcredential can enter the optical technology workforce equipped with valuable skills. For those interested in further education, options include continuing with Level 2 training or stacking credentials toward a certificate or degree program.

For more information about the Precision Optics Level 1 microcredential pathway at Rio Salado College, prospective students are encouraged to explore further details provided by the institution.
