Gilbert eighth-grader named student-athlete of the month

Legacy Traditional Schools in Arizona has recently named Mishel L., an eighth-grade student at Legacy Traditional School in Gilbert, as the Student-Athlete of the Month. The accolade highlights her academic excellence and strong character which the institution greatly values. Mishel plays a leadership role in several areas, including serving as vice president of the National Junior Honor Society, earning the Principal’s Pride recognition, and competing in multiple athletic teams under the Canyon Athletic Association.

In her academic pursuits, Mishel is recognized for her active participation and dedication to learning. "Mishel approaches her academic responsibilities with diligence," said Ms. Ocalsa, her geometry and eighth-grade science teacher. "She consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic and a desire to learn. Her engagement in class discussions and willingness to ask thoughtful, clarifying questions set a strong example for her peers."

In the athletic field, Mishel demonstrates exemplary teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. As co-captain of the girls’ basketball team, she is admired by her teammates and coaches for her leadership qualities. "She encourages her teammates, communicates effectively, and leads by example," shared her coach. "Whether in practice or during games, Mishel is consistently focused, prepared, and gives her best effort."

Balancing her academics, athletics, and student leadership, Mishel is noted for her humility and discipline. Ms. Ocalsa had this to say about her: "She is intrinsically motivated. Her academic discipline, curiosity, and leadership qualities make her a model student-athlete. She is an inspiration to others and a joy to have in class."

Mishel's commitment to her goals sets a high benchmark for students, showcasing what is possible with dedication and values-driven efforts.
