Recap of Chandler City Council Meeting on Feb. 10, 2022

City of Chandler issued the following announcement on Feb. 11.

The Chandler City Council met at 6:04 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, taking action on a total of 26 consent agenda items and one action item. Highlights from the meeting included:

  • Approved an agreement with Brightview Landscape Services, Inc., for airport landscape enhancements, in an amount not to exceed $80,000. Services under this agreement consist of landscape refurbishment and enhancement, irrigation repair, clearing, grading, tree removal, and rejuvenation of existing plant material along Curtiss Way, Stinson Way, Aviation Drive, Airport Boulevard, adjacent to the Airport Terminal and within the Terminal parking lot. The enhancements include installation of approximately 900 tons of landscape rock, 25 new trees and 225 new five-gallon shrubs.
  • Adopted a resolution authorizing the execution of a license to use Salt River Project property, located at the Consolidated Canal between Germann Road and Chandler Boulevard, to conduct the City’s annual Family Bike Ride. This year’s event will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Chandler Park and Ride with the bike ride on the Paseo Trail, within the Salt River Project (SRP) Consolidated Canal right-of-way.   
  • Approved a final ordinance approving the rezoning for the Arizona Avenue Commerce Center, approximately 16.6 acres to a planned area development for commercial, office, business park and light industrial uses. This development is located north of the northeast corner of Arizona Avenue and Germann Road.
  • Introduced and tentatively adopted an ordinance declaring the documents known as the “International Fire Code, 2021 Edition” and “2021 Amendments to Fire Code Exceptions in Chapter 28, Fire Prevention” as public record. The proposed ordinance also includes changing the last phrase of the proposed amendment to include Section 28-23 to read: the use of discharge, ignition or permissible fireworks is prohibited in all public parks, public retention basins and public facilities (removing public streets and roads), to repeal conflicting ordinances, and establishing an effective date.
  • Awarded a professional services agreement to Dibble & Associates Consulting Engineers, Inc., for Chandler Boulevard – Dobson Road to Chippewa Place Water Improvements Design Services, in an amount not to exceed $349,502. This project is a continuation of a program to replace water mains that are susceptible to main breaks due to age and condition.
  • Awarded a design and construction agreement to Salt River Project (SRP), for the North Alma School Well Design and Construction, in an amount not to exceed $360,197. The agreement will allow SRP to provide the well equipping design and construction services necessary to connect the well to the City water distribution system in full conformity with State and County requirements.
  • Adopted the 2021 editions of the International Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Residential, Fuel Gas, Energy Conservation, Existing Building, Swimming Pool and Spa Codes, and the 2020 edition of the National Electrical Code with local amendments. The City of Chandler adopts model construction codes, with certain local amendments, to govern construction, remodeling and renovation of structures within the city. These codes provide a base level of safety for the occupants of buildings constructed in Chandler and offer consistency for builders and developers.
  • Adopted a resolution approving Chandler’s Title VI Implementation Plan for Transit Services 2021 Update.
  • Appointed Shachi Kale to the Arts Commission and Juan Te Sharron Daile to the Merit Board.
The meeting adjourned at 6:48 p.m.

During a Study Session held on Monday, Feb. 7, Mayor Hartke, Vice Mayor Terry Roe and members of the City Council honored two employees for their 10 years of service to the City of Chandler: Rachelle Faherty, Information Technology Department; and Danny Avalos, Public Works & Utilities Department.

The Mayor and Council also recognized the City’s accounting team for their outstanding work as a recipient of the Government Finance Officers Association’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the annual comprehensive financial report for the 39th consecutive year. This report has become the nationwide standard for local government financial reporting and requires about four months of intense work. It’s also used by all three credit rating agencies to help in our assessment of the City’s credit worthiness.

In addition, Mayor Hartke proclaimed the month of February as Go Red for Women Month.

The next meeting of the Chandler City Council will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24. Council meetings are aired live, as well as replayed on the Chandler Channel - Cable Channel 11, streamed online at Chandler Video and on YouTube.
