Scottsdale, Ariz.-based CEO Curt Mercadante said one key business lesson he’s learned through his career is to “be a student of your company.”

“Instead of being someone who says, ‘I can’t do this,’ or ‘we can’t do this,’ ask, ‘how can we make this happen?’” Mercadante told host Joe Pici on the Sales Edge Podcast. “’I can’t do this, we can’t do this’ — that’s a stop, that’s a period, that’s a wall.”

“If you become a true student of your company and a student of your function and a student of your goals, then you're learning, and if you're learning, you're growing,” said Mercadante.

A learner’s mindset “is when an individual considers every new experience as an opportunity to learn,” wrote Shane Barker, CEO of Content Solutions, at 360Learning.com. “People who possess this mentality can adapt to their surroundings better and absorb information faster.”

In her 2006 book, “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success,” psychologist Carol Dweck writes about the power of a learning, or growth, mindset. Dweck's research, spanning decades, has demonstrated how individuals who cultivate a growth mindset believe that their abilities can be developed over time, leading to increased motivation, resilience, and a willingness to embrace challenges. This concept has garnered widespread recognition in education, sports, and business settings, reshaping how people approach learning and achievement.

Mercadante is CEO of Advantage Informatics, a company that provides publications, news organizations, and businesses with reliable, timely, affordable content. He also is a keynote speaker who presents on the topics of mindset, productivity, leadership, and branding.

His podcast episode with Pici included discussions about professional development, remote working, productivity, and priority management.

In addition to hosting The Sales Edge Podcast, Pici is the co-founder of Pici & Pici, Inc., at which he serves as a strategist for sales professionals and business owners. He has been ranked as the number one sales trainer in the world by Global Gurus, largely for his live phone call sales workshops.
