Rio Salado College has been recognized with the Mabel K. Edmonds Excellence in Equity Award by the National Council for Workforce Excellence. This award highlights programs at community or technical colleges that show effective, equity-conscious practices. The selection is based on six criteria: executive summary, excellence in equity, community involvement, innovation, outcome-driven results, and scalability.

Reina Ferrufino leads the DEIB department and is acknowledged along with the Rio Salado DEIB Council members for their efforts. The council comprises 33 staff, faculty, and students who guide the college's diversity initiatives. Their strategic roadmap was developed through team-building activities and listening sessions within the college community. They identified four focus areas: Equity and Best Practices, Student Engagement, Teaching and Learning, and Assessment and Evaluation. The roadmap includes strategic goals for 2024-2026.

The DEIB Council also pursues partnerships with local and national organizations to enhance growth and inclusivity. Monthly teach-ins feature leaders from other colleges to share best practices.

The award reflects Rio Salado College’s commitment to an inclusive environment where every community member can thrive. "As educators, our work truly matters,” Ferrufino said. “It transforms lives, shapes futures, and strengthens communities."

NCWE is a community of workforce professionals focused on skill development, networking, and mentoring future growth.
