Gerry Dillingham watched her son, Kenny Dillingham, Arizona State University's football coach, as he accepted the Big 12 championship trophy at AT&T Stadium. The Sun Devils defeated Iowa State 45-19 on December 7, securing a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Reflecting on the moment, Gerry said it was "unreal" and noted that coaching ASU had been Kenny's dream since childhood. Despite being picked to finish last in the Big 12 preseason media poll, ASU now heads to play a quarterfinal playoff game in the Peach Bowl on January 1.

Tim Healey, ASU's radio play-by-play voice for nearly three decades, described this season as unprecedented. Running backs coach Shaun Aguano admitted surprise at their success. Freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt was named Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year while Cam Skattebo earned accolades for his performance and was praised by former Alabama coach Nick Saban.

ASU President Michael Crow highlighted Dillingham's creativity and innovation as key factors in their success. Assistant head coach Charlie Ragle emphasized the importance of establishing team culture. Players like safety Xavion Alford and offensive lineman Leif Fautanu noted a change in team unity compared to previous years.

Fautanu recalled an annual trek up Mount Kush where no player turned back this year, signaling strong team cohesion. Defensive lineman C.J. Fite also sensed something special developing within the team.

The Sun Devil community has rallied around this unexpected success. Tim Hovik canceled a vacation to attend the championship game, while Southwest Airlines added flights for fans traveling to Dallas. Men's basketball coach Bobby Hurley attended too, expressing relief at not having to make decisions during the game.

ASU athletic director Graham Rossini reported increased donations following significant wins this season, supporting athletes' name, image, and likeness revenue.

Dillingham expressed gratitude for his team's growth throughout the season and reflected on what it means for longtime ASU supporters: "I think you can achieve anything here."

As they prepare for their next challenge in Atlanta's Peach Bowl on January 1st against another top-tier opponent from across America’s collegiate landscape—the journey continues unabatedly forward into uncharted territory yet filled with promise anew!
