The Arizona House Education Committee has approved HB2867, known as the Antisemitism in Education Act. The bill, sponsored by State Representative Michael Way, aims to prevent antisemitic conduct or rhetoric in Arizona's public schools and state agencies. It also establishes penalties for violations.
Representative Way emphasized the importance of educational environments free from discrimination. "Our schools should be places of learning, not breeding grounds for hatred and discrimination," he said. "Arizona has zero tolerance for antisemitism, and this bill ensures that our classrooms are free from the toxic ideology that fuels division and hostility."
The legislation prohibits using taxpayer funds for antisemitic curricula or activities and aligns with the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism, which is recognized by the U.S. State Department. It seeks to ensure accountability for violations and empowers students, parents, and educators to report such incidents.
The bill reflects the House Republican Majority Plan's focus on public safety by maintaining discrimination-free schools. "House Republicans are leading with action, not lip service," said Representative Way. "We’re committed to protecting students and teachers from the kind of coercion and discrimination that have no place in Arizona’s classrooms."
HB2867 will now proceed to the full House for further consideration.
Michael Way represents Legislative District 15 in Arizona, which includes Mesa, Queen Creek in Maricopa County, and San Tan Valley in Pinal County.
