Congressman Andy Biggs (R-AZ) has introduced the Fiscally Responsible Israel Supplemental Act, 2024, a legislation aimed at providing $17.6 billion in military and security assistance to Israel. The funding would be used to reinforce Israel's defense systems, replenish U.S. military operations in the region, and protect U.S. personnel and citizens in Israel.
"In November, Speaker Johnson paired Israel aid with the necessary offset on the floor, but Senator Schumer torpedoed the package in the Senate. The House shouldn't stop there and cave to Senator Schumer's demands for a clean spending package. My legislation grants an opportunity to financially support Israel without having to borrow money," said Congressman Andy Biggs.
The need for this assistance is highlighted by the recent attack carried out by Hamas terrorists on October 7th, where over 1,400 Israelis were killed and hundreds more were taken hostage. Despite this, the House of Representatives recently voted against a security supplemental for Israel, as the proposed package did not include any spending offsets to fund the aid.
"Israel remains America's greatest ally and deserves to be protected from barbaric actors like Hamas," Congressman Biggs emphasized.
To fund the proposed assistance, Congressman Biggs suggests repealing the Fiscal Responsibility Act's Department of Commerce and IRS "slush fund" that was created during debt ceiling negotiations last summer.
The legislation, known as the Fiscally Responsible Israel Supplemental Act, 2024, aims to provide financial support to Israel while ensuring responsible spending by using existing funds. It is a response to the need for support in the wake of the devastating attack by Hamas and aims to prevent the need for borrowing money.
