Mesa is set to host a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Gateway Library on Saturday, May 18 at 8:30 a.m. The event will take place at 5036 S. Eastmark Parkway. The state-of-the-art facility will be Mesa’s first new full-service library in over two decades.

Mayor John Giles expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The Gateway Library is a beautifully designed facility that will bring innovative services and programs to southeast Mesa. Libraries not only lend books but also inspire and connect our community. I’m thrilled to see this project underway and am grateful to Mesa’s voters for approving the bond issue that made it possible."

Councilmember Scott Somers also emphasized the importance of libraries, saying, “Libraries are more than just buildings with books; they hold far more profound significance for our city. Gateway Library represents an invaluable resource for education, a sanctuary for imagination, and a cornerstone of community.”

The Gateway Library will span approximately 28,000 square feet and will include features such as a multi-purpose room; THINKspot collaborative workspace and makerspace; specific areas for library books and resources tailored to adults, teens, and children; an open concept with rows of books under high ceilings illuminated by bright lights; a digital art display wall; an outdoor reading patio; and an outdoor plaza suitable for community events.

Designed by Richärd Kennedy Architects - known for their award-winning library designs - the new facility has been met with anticipation from Polly Bonnett, Mesa Public Library Director. She stated: “We are excited about having an architecturally stunning, innovative library providing a much-needed service to this part of Mesa. Our library patrons are going to be very happy with Gateway Library and what it will offer and we can’t wait for it to open.”

The new library is expected to open its doors in the summer of 2025. Funding sources include both the 2018 General Obligation Bond approved by voters and construction sales tax. The library's construction is being handled by Willmeng Construction, with design input from Richärd Kennedy Architects.

Following the groundbreaking ceremony, activities will be held adjacent to the site at BASIS Mesa at Eastmark School, located at 5010 S. Eastmark Parkway, until 10:30 a.m. These will include library project information, a virtual reality experience, craft kits, raffles for building sets, STEM activities for children, and information on signing up for a library card and the Summer Reading Program. Additionally, Kids Need to Read will be present to distribute free books.
