Mesa Public Schools has initiated a program to recognize outstanding schools at their monthly board meetings. In October 2024, Shepherd Junior High School was highlighted as the secondary spotlight school. Principal Jill Benza shared insights on the honorees.

Lucas Silva was recognized as an outstanding student. He is actively involved in various school activities, including student council, advanced band, and the yearbook club. He also serves as a WEB leader while taking three honors classes and two high school credit-bearing courses. His teachers commend his ability to tackle challenges effectively and his willingness to assist others. Mrs. Driskill, his former honors ELA teacher, remarked, “Lucas takes a gentle, yet firm initiative when collaborating with others...He will rule the world someday and make it a much kinder, safer, and smarter place to live.”

Nicole Turilli Montero received recognition as an outstanding educator. She joined Shepherd Junior High in fall 2023 to teach 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts. Her passion for teaching was evident from her interview, making her an excellent addition to the department. Parents have praised her impact on their children's learning experiences; one parent noted that Mrs. Turilli “helped her daughter soar to new heights with her writing.”

Coleen Townsend was honored as an outstanding classified staff member and described by a teacher as "the heart of the school." Starting at Shepherd in April 2011 as registrar before becoming principal's secretary, she plays multiple roles within the administrative team. Known for her professionalism and organizational skills, Coleen manages budgets and projects efficiently while maintaining positive relationships with various departments.

Shepherd Junior High School appreciates these individuals' contributions to creating a supportive educational environment.
