Three students from Rio Salado College have been awarded Tempe Workforce Skills Accelerator scholarships to further their education. These scholarships stem from a 2023 partnership between Rio Salado and the Tempe Chamber of Commerce, aimed at addressing workforce skills gaps in Tempe.

The scholarship program offers three online microcredential pathways: Data Analytics, Quality Customer Service, and Small Business Management. Each can be completed in 6-12 months.

Angelica Dascent, a single mother who lost her job, applied for the scholarship to continue her education. "It is just me and my children and since I lost my job I have been living on my savings," Dascent said. She aims to use her small business certificate to help people and prevent homelessness. "My goal is to create a safe environment and trusted business where I can help people by listening to their needs and wants."

Munira Smith, with nearly two decades as a marketing director, seeks a data analytics certificate through the program. "I believe a certificate in data analytics will provide the competitive skills necessary to succeed in a world where data is used to drive marketing decisions," she stated. The funding will allow her to enhance her skills without impacting family medical resources.

Amy Weeks, another recipient, has prioritized her son's college tuition over her own educational pursuits until now. "Receiving this scholarship is a beacon of hope," Weeks expressed. Having completed a small business certificate last fall, she is set to earn a certified bookkeeper certificate soon.

The Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation General Scholarship Application for Fall 2025 is open until April 30, 2025. Additionally, donations can be made through the EmpowerED campaign to support students like Amy, Angelica, and Munira.
